Animation director Joaquim Dos Santos claims that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse would have had a Spider-Man variation that fans would not have imagined. The abundance of Easter eggs in Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse made the game worth replaying. Similar to Ready Player One, the majority of the franchise allusions in Across the Spider-Verse are only discernible after an extensive frame-by-frame examination. In the movie, Spider-Man takes on a variety of personas, from the well-known versions to really bizarre spin-offs like Spider-Cat and Spider-Rex. Joaquim Dos Santos, the creative director of Across the Spider-Verse, said in an episode of Sony’s Creator to Creator series that the movie almost featured Miles Morales’ swinging patio heater glitch from Insomniac Games.

In the YouTube video, the directors of Across the Spider-Verse and the creative minds of Insomniac traded notes. During a digression in their conversation, Dos Santos admitted that the animation crew for the movie was so obsessed with Miles Morales from Insomniac that they ultimately learned about the Spider-Lamp, a quirk in the game that turns Miles into a patio heater after doing a specific side mission. “I think the fact that we had a crew member that brought that up and said, ‘What about if there’s like a space heater?'” he remarked, confirming that they thought about including the allusion in the movie. As if that were real love.”

Dos Santos said that certain members of our team were acting like they were playing your game while they were working on the movie. “We nearly included a bug that one of your people found in… We nearly installed a space heater-style heater swinging through.” To be fair, there was a scene in Across the Spider-Verse where a sentient Spider-Mobile appeared, so it’s not entirely absurd to think that an inanimate item like a streetlamp might swing from roofs. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 creative director Bryan Intihar recognised the allusion before bringing out their own game’s Spider-Cube bug. He made fun of the cube in the game and said, “Well, we fixed that.” Spider-Trash and Spider-Brick, two other inanimate items that the character glitched into in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, were also included. Producer Phil Lord of Across the Spider-Verse even mentioned the Spider-Lamp bug in 2020 and hinted at its inclusion in the movie in an X post. Even though none of these game bugs were included to the Spider-Man canon, the Beyond the Spider-Verse trilogy’s creators still have an opportunity to fix everything before it concludes.
