Florence Pugh has revealed the intense behind-the-scenes drama that unfolded during the filming of “Thunderbolts,” particularly regarding a scene where her character, Yelena Belova, jumps off the second tallest building in the world. The location for this daring stunt was the Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which stands at an impressive 2,722 feet tall. Pugh, known for her love of heights, was determined to perform the jump herself, despite Marvel’s initial reluctance due to significant insurance risks.
Pugh recounted her relentless efforts to convince Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to allow her to undertake the stunt. She explained, “I got on all the emails. It was in the script, and then slowly as we got closer and closer to shooting, they said they don’t think it’s going to happen because it’s a crazy insurance ordeal and obviously we’re not going to throw [me] off the second tallest building in the world.” Undeterred, Pugh continued to push for the stunt, even playfully referring to herself as a “sassy Karen” in her emails to Feige. She argued that the stunt would be a publicity goldmine, stating, “It’s going to do wonders for the press tour.”
Despite the challenges, Pugh’s persistence paid off, and she was eventually given the green light to perform the jump. The experience, however, was far from easy. Pugh described the mental and physical toll of the stunt, noting that it required a level of mental control that she likened to a superpower. The adrenaline rush was so intense that she fell asleep for three hours immediately after completing the stunt. This level of commitment to her craft echoes the legendary stunts performed by Tom Cruise, such as scaling the Burj Khalifa in “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.”
“Thunderbolts” promises to be a thrilling addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, featuring a cast of anti-heroes including Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, and David Harbour, among others. The film, set to open in theaters on May 2, 2024, will see these characters embark on a dangerous mission, with Pugh’s daring stunt serving as a testament to the film’s high-stakes action and her dedication to her role.
