Status: Reported. The picture on Avengers: Secret Wars got confusing fast this week, and the Avengers Secret Wars filming question is now genuinely open. A day after an industry report claimed Marvel had paused UK production for five weeks almost as soon as it began, scooper MyTimeToShineHello posted that the film has in fact started shooting, and that it opened with what the leaker described as “the most insane scene of all time.” The two claims sit directly against each other, and Marvel Studios has said nothing on the record either way.
What is the Avengers Secret Wars filming hiatus report?
The original claim, circulated on August 19, 2026, came via a production listing suggesting Secret Wars had formally commenced principal photography in the UK and then immediately entered a five-week break, with cameras not expected back until late September. On its face that reads alarming, and plenty of fans took it as a sign of trouble on Marvel’s most ambitious production.
In practice, a gap like that is not unusual. Large tentpoles frequently log an official production start for legal, tax and insurance purposes, shoot a small block of material, then pause while sets finish construction and the main unit assembles. Pinewood is building enormous standing sets for Battleworld, and the Russo brothers are still finishing Avengers: Doomsday. A staggered start is the normal shape of a production this size, not evidence of a crisis.
What does the leaker actually claim?
MyTimeToShineHello’s counter-claim, posted August 20, 2026, is that filming has genuinely begun and that the first scene shot is a spectacular one. The leaker offered no detail on what the scene contains, who is in it, or where it falls in the story, which is typical of the account’s style: short, declarative, unverifiable.
Both things can be true at once, which is the most likely reading. Secret Wars could have shot an opening block, impressed the people who saw it, and then gone into a planned hiatus while the bulk of the production ramps up. That would explain why a production tracker logs a hiatus and a leaker insists cameras rolled, without either being wrong.
CREDIBILITY BOX
STATUS: Reported and disputed
SOURCE: MyTimeToShineHello (X, 20 August 2026), claiming filming has begun; contradicts a production report (19 August 2026) citing a five-week hiatus into late September
CORROBORATED BY: Nothing official. The Cosmic Circus has separately reported Battleworld plot details, but nothing confirming the shooting schedule.
WHAT IS CONFIRMED: Avengers: Secret Wars is dated for 17 December 2027; the Russo brothers are directing and said at San Diego Comic-Con they were prepping while finishing Doomsday.
WHAT IS NOT: Whether principal photography has meaningfully started, whether the hiatus is real, and anything at all about an opening scene.
OUR TAKE: A soft start followed by a planned break reconciles both claims, which is why we are not treating this as bad news. On the specific “most insane scene of all time” detail, we put it at 4 out of 10.
What is actually confirmed about Secret Wars
Strip out the noise and the confirmed picture is short. Anthony and Joe Russo are directing, with Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron writing. The film is dated December 17, 2027, one year after Avengers: Doomsday lands on December 18, 2026. At Comic-Con the Russos said they were finishing Doomsday while prepping Secret Wars, with Anthony Russo describing a start that was “soon, so soon it makes us sweat a little bit.” That is the extent of it. Casting, plot and schedule beyond those points remain unannounced.
For the wider context on how Doom’s story is being built across the two films, see our Avengers: Doomsday plot breakdown and our look at what Doctor Doom does to the Fantastic Four in Secret Wars. Both are worth reading with the same scepticism we are applying here.
What happens next
The tell will be crew and cast sightings. If Secret Wars is genuinely in a hiatus, UK-based crew social posts and Pinewood geotags will go quiet until late September, then spike. If the leaker is right that substantial filming is underway, expect set photos within weeks. Marvel is unlikely to comment either way, so watch the people rather than the press releases. We will update this post when the picture clears.
