The late Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman is admired by director Ryan Coogler, who also discusses how he continues to pay tribute to the actor. Over the course of three years, Chadwick Boseman portrayed T’Challa, also known as Black Panther, in Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Despite his brief three-year stay as Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman had an unmatched impact on Marvel, comic book films, and popular culture in general. Ryan Coogler, director of Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, reflects on Chadwick Boseman’s traits as an actor and a person on The Breakfast Show. Coogler praised the late actor’s patience, punctuality, and discipline to “never break action,” calling Boseman “the kind of teacher who you never knew you were getting a lesson when he taught.” See the complete quote from Ryan Coogler below:
“He changed my life. He was the kind of teacher who you never knew you was getting a lesson when he taught. It was all by example, and what he gave me and Michael was patience. He moved at an old-school pace, and he took his time. He was always early. He was that type of dude. And Mike will tell you this, I told him, man, I said, ‘Hey bro, what would Chad do in this role? If he had this role, what would he do?’ Because Chad never broke action.”
Ryan Coogler also remembers how Disney executives were taken aback when Chadwick Boseman spoke to them in his Wakandan accent. Boseman never “turned off” the accent “until the wrap,” according to Coogler. According to Coogler:
“He was talking in an African accent. Disney execs came to see us on Panther. It was week two, and they pulled up, and it was the T’Challa accent, and they were freaked out. I was like, ‘Don’t be freaked out. He’s working, man. He don’t turn it off until we wrap.”
All of his co-stars, coworkers, and collaborators—Marvel and others—have a lot of respect for Chadwick Boseman. The effect of Boseman’s performance in Black Panther, which spanned four films and three years, is evident on screen, and Coogler’s remarks just highlight how much Chadwick Boseman’s commitment was required. Chadwick Boseman’s attributes continue to inspire people six years after his last MCU appearance and a couple years before Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther 3. It was challenging for Marvel Studios to decide against recasting T’Challa following Chadwick Boseman’s death, but this has preserved Boseman’s legacy—at least until a series reboot can theoretically start again for every character. According to Ryan Coogler’s most recent remarks, both viewers and creators are still affected by the gap left by Chadwick Boseman in the MCU. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever pays tribute to Chadwick Boseman and his depiction of T’Challa, and Black Panther 3 is likely to do the same, as T’Challa is still missing from the MCU.
Phase 6’s impending Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will be greatly affected by Chadwick Boseman’s absence, particularly if Black Panther 3 comes out around the same time. After Avengers: Endgame, Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther had the unquestionable potential to serve as the MCU’s face and would have played a significant role in crossover events. In his place, Avengers: Doomsday will feature Winston Duke and Letitia Wright as the MCU’s Wakanda representatives.
