Recently, director Kasra Farahani of Loki talked about creating the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893 for the third episode of the second season of the Disney+ series. After working at Marvel Studios as an art director, concept artist, production designer, and writer, Farahani made his directorial debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Loki Season 2 Episode 3, “1893.”He described in an interview how the Loki team created the immersive 1893 World’s Fair sets that have won praise from both fans and reviewers. We were specifically creating more complete, 360-degree sets, complete with integrated lighting in the ceilings, Farahani said. The studio was really apprehensive about it since they hadn’t done much of that. Therefore, it required a lot of persuasion. I’m willing to speculate—and hope—that it will even alter how things are shot outside of our exhibition. Marvel Studios films, as Farahani pointed out, seldom reproduce “fully 360 sets,” preferring to film on green stages as opposed to actual locales. Farahani is not the only Marvel superhero defying convention; Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy also favours real sets and locales over green screens. In September 2023, he recently provided an explanation of why he decided against using green screens early in the production: I made a very early prep decision that, despite Deadpool being a part of the MCU, I didn’t want another Marvel film to be filmed on a green screen stage with digital set extensions.

Beyond the breathtaking World’s Fair sets, “1893” introduced Balder the Brave, Thor’s half-brother from the comics, to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time. In the episode, Balder, Odin, and Thor are carved out of wood in a Norse pavilion that Loki and Mobius happen across. Since “no one’s even heard of him,” Loki queries why Balder was featured in the pavilion. Mobius responds, “Sure they have.” Balder, the Mighty. I forget sometimes that you are one of them, you know. Of them, you are one. Astounds me.”
