Director of X-Men ’97 Jake Castorena talked about The Watcher’s unexpected appearance in the most recent episode of the animated rebirth. The fifth dimensional entity first debuted in I Am Groot Season 2, making this the third Disney+ cartoon to utilize the What If…? narrator. “Remember It,” the fifth episode of X-Men ’97 Season 1, had a fleeting glimpse of The Watcher’s silhouette in the sky prior to the catastrophic sentinel strike that took place on Genosha. Two of the X-Men’s most beloved members perished in the unexpected attack, which left many other mutants devastated as the episode came to a finish. Castorena discussed the reasoning for the creative team’s choice to include The Watcher in Episode 5 during an interview. “I don’t remember if that wasn’t in the script, per se, but it definitely came up early on in the rooms and in the conversations, like, ‘Oh, can we put The Watcher in there?'” he said.
Castorena went on, “We’re introducing the mutant massacre, which is akin to E for Extinction and inspires narratives into the episode, since it’s a major moment, genocide is going to happen. How was The Watcher not present to see this? But it’s really rather good. We are grateful to Anthony, our production designer, and our paint crew for their tireless efforts in perfecting the finish—you won’t miss it even if you blink. Observing the responses of fans who are rewatching The Watcher has been a lot of fun. So that has been a lot of fun.” Marvel Studios released the X-Men ’97 midseason teaser after the debut of Episode 5, giving fans a taste of what to anticipate from the show’s following five episodes. A recognisable vibranium shield with a starry background emerges at the end of the film, apparently confirming Captain America’s debut. The First Avenger will really be returning to the program after making an appearance in one episode of the first X-Men: The Animated Series, starring Steve Rogers.
Fans should expect more Marvel appearances in upcoming episodes, especially if Castorena is given the go-ahead to utilize any character by Marvel Studios, as she previously stated in an interview. “The show is filled with cameos. Since the beginning, that has been engrained and is related to what the original program did, correct? The original ‘X-Men’ series was the MCU prior to the MCU evolving into the MCU. And since that’s the main tenet of the program, we must follow it if we hope to succeed or experience a real comeback.” A.J. LoCascio as Gambit, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, JP Karliak as Morph, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, Holly Chou as Jubilee, Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, Ray Chase as Cyclops, and more will all voice characters in the Disney+ revival. It has already been established that the program would return for two more seasons ahead of the Season 1 finale. The second installment was already in production.
