The Spider Within, a newly published short film that now has a YouTube premiere date, will show fans of the Spider-Verse franchise a more intimate side of Miles Morales. The Spider Within is reportedly set to launch on YouTube on March 27. The Spider Within follows Miles’s battles with anxiety as he attempts to manage his life at home and at school while still playing Brooklyn’s Spider-Man. He has a panic episode that compels him to face the source of his problems. The Spider Within debuted at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June, not too long after Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse had its theatrical debut. The Spider Within is a joint production of Sony Pictures Animation and Sony Pictures Imageworks, and it takes place in the universe of Across the Spider-Verse. The short film is also a part of Sony’s Leading and Empowering New Storytellers (LENS) mentorship programme, which was started in 2022 with the goal of fostering chances for young, diverse artists with great potential to further their careers. The short’s premiere at Annecy was positively received.
The Spider-Verse was taken to new heights with Across the Spider-Verse. At the global box office, the highly anticipated follow-up brought in $691 million, almost twice as much as the successful Into the Spider-Verse. Furthermore, Across the Spider-Verse was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards and Golden Globes, where it was defeated by The Boy and the Heron both times. It also received several Annie Awards. In the movie, Miles (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) battle the Spot (Jason Schwartzman) to protect Spider-People from other Multiverses. The last installment of the Spider-Verse trilogy, Beyond the Spider-Verse, is currently in production. Due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the threequel’s original release date of late this month was postponed. Beyond the Spider-Verse will release “when it’s ready,” according to co-producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, though they hinted at an explosive trilogy finale. What is included in Beyond the Spider-Verse is unknown. But a new hint points to the conclusion of a major plot arc involving Miles and his darker version from Across the Spider-Verse’s conclusion.
