Thunderbolts’ sets the stage for a bold new Avengers era

With the premiere and fan screenings of “Thunderbolts” by Marvel Studios, spoilers have inevitably made their way online, revealing the mystery behind the movie’s asterisk. The film’s title, “Thunderbolts,” has been a subject of speculation for months, with fans and social media scoopers trying to decipher its meaning. Now, it has been confirmed that the asterisk stands for “New Avengers,” a title that promises a new chapter for the team, as hinted in a title card that features Lewis Pullman’s character “Bob.”

The concept of the New Avengers originates from Brian Michael Bendis’ comic series, where, after the Avengers Disassembled event, a new team of heroes was formed by Captain America and Iron Man. This team included characters like Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Wolverine, and The Sentry. In the MCU, the Thunderbolts being referred to as the New Avengers suggests a standalone movie, possibly setting the stage for future adventures with a team of antiheroes.

“Thunderbolts” features an unconventional group of antiheroes, including Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, and John Walker. These disillusioned characters find themselves in a deadly trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, forcing them to confront their pasts and decide whether they will find redemption or tear themselves apart. The film’s cast includes Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen, Olga Kurylenko, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Lewis Pullman.

Directed by Jake Schreier and written by Eric Pearson, Lee Sung Jin, and Joanna Calo, “Thunderbolts” is set to hit theaters on May 2, 2025. The movie promises to deliver a thrilling and unpredictable journey for its antihero ensemble, leaving audiences on the edge of their seats as they navigate their path to potential redemption.
