Two significant Oscar nominations for Marvel at the 2024 academy awards

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has received two nominations for its two films, both of which were enormous blockbusters, at the 2024 Academy Awards. The Oscar nominations were recently released, and the ceremony is quickly approaching. Similar to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has received a nomination for Best Animated Feature Film (via X). The trilogy may benefit from the nomination, which is connected to Sony Pictures, as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse took home the prize in its category in 2019. Robot Dreams, Elemental, Nimona, The Boy and the Heron, and Elemental are the other candidates in the same category for the 2024 Academy Awards.

Although the Oscar nomination for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is certainly noteworthy, Marvel has another reason to be happy. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, its biggest hit from 2023, was nominated for an Academy Award in 2024. Because Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 received a nomination for Best Visual Effects, the two are not directly competing. The last movie in the trilogy may alter that. The trilogy has received nominations in this category for both of its prior movies, Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017). However, it has never taken home the trophy. The Creator, Godzilla: Minus One, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning, Part One, and Napoleon are the other nominees in the same category for the 2024 Academy Awards.

Considering the commercial success of both films, none of the nominations are shocking. With a global box office total of $845.4 million, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 became the fourth most successful movie of 2023 after an incredible run. Like the other films in the series, it was financed with about $250 million, but fortunately, it was able to win over the public and turn a profit even after deducting marketing expenses. Similar to its predecessor, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, it ended its theatrical run with $682.3 million, making it the sixth highest-grossing movie of 2023 despite having an even smaller budget of about $100 million.

Both reviewers and fans were thrilled by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which concluded James Gunn’s trilogy. With an 82% rating, the movie was Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Even more delighted, the fans contributed to the movie receiving a 94% audience rating. Regarding Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the reviewers adored the animated movie even more. With a 95% rating from reviewers, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is also deemed fresh. Fans, meanwhile, were as enamoured with it, giving it a comparable 94%. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will be the movie that comes after the animated one. The Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, March 10, at 4 p.m. PT at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles. The complete list of nominees is available on the Academy Awards website.
