Disney officially gives up on another project starring Jonathan Majors

Disney is formally abandoning the distribution of a finished picture featuring the troubled actor, further severing their relationship. Magazine Dreams, starring Majors, was preparing for its Sundance Film Festival premiere at this time last year. Majors had received extremely positive reviews in its early runs, and there was even talk that his performance would get him considered for an Oscar. After two months, Majors was taken into custody on charges of domestic abuse. While he was being tried, the Disney-owned company Searchlight Pictures postponed the release of Magazine Dreams until December 2023. It was speculated that Magazine Dreams may be shelved entirely when Majors was found guilty at trial. According to rumours, that has finally happened as Searchlight has formally cancelled the project. The story claims that Searchlight has returned the filmmakers’ rights to Magazine Dreams. In order to perhaps find a release elsewhere, the film will now be marketed to other studios and streaming services. Because of its violent themes and Majors’ actual assault and harassment conviction, the movie could still have trouble finding a new location. Majors co-starred in the movie as its principal actor and executive producer.

A month before Majors’s arrest, in February 2023, Searchlight supposedly paid something in the mid-seven figure range for the rights to Magazine Dreams. The movie was supposed to get an awards season push in the latter part of the year, as it was scheduled for release in December 2023. The latest rumour reportedly said that director and writer Elijah Bynum planned to polish a new version of the movie before its general theatrical release, but it’s unclear if any work on that version had started. Disney originally fired Majors from his prominent position as Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe prior to cancelling Magazine Dreams. Majors was supposed to be the villain of the next Avengers sequel, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, after making appearances in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Loki Season 2. This role would have surely brought in a sizable salary. It was also recently rumoured that Majors, who was supposed to feature in another movie called 48 Hours in Vegas, had lost his part as Dennis Rodman.
