Status: Rumour. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man may be the true main character of Avengers: Secret Wars. That is the claim from insider James Mack (@JamesMackwl), who reported on August 20 that Peter Parker “will be to Avengers Secret Wars what Stark was to Infinity War in terms of protagonism.” If accurate, the December 2027 finale of the Multiverse Saga would be built around Spider-Man’s arc the way Avengers: Infinity War revolved around Tony Stark and Thanos. Marvel Studios has not confirmed which character leads the Avengers: Secret Wars story, so this stays firmly in rumour territory, but it lines up with a striking amount of what we already know.
What exactly does the Avengers: Secret Wars report say?
The claim, relayed by SuperHeroHype, is specific about the comparison: not that Spider-Man simply appears, which is already expected, but that his personal journey carries the film’s emotional spine. In Infinity War, Tony Stark’s guilt, his fear of losing the kid, and his failure on Titan gave the movie its center of gravity even inside a cast of dozens. The report suggests Secret Wars hands that weight to Peter Parker. Notably, the same insider separately claims Doctor Doom wins at the end of Avengers: Doomsday, which would set up a Battleworld-set Secret Wars where a street-level hero with nothing left to lose becomes the resistance’s heart.
Why Spider-Man leading Secret Wars adds up
Spider-Man: Brand New Day made this rumour easy to believe. The film is the biggest hit of 2026 by a wide margin, has pushed past two billion dollars worldwide, and, as we covered in our Brand New Day box office report, it is rewriting Sony and Marvel’s sense of what Holland’s Spider-Man can carry. Brand New Day also ends with Peter more isolated than ever, a version of the character audiences are primed to follow into a cosmic war. On top of that, Sony and Marvel have both signaled that Spider-Man sits at the center of their shared movie plans, something Marvel Television’s leadership echoed in the strategy briefing we broke down in Marvel’s future plans.
There is also the Stark symmetry. Holland has said he learned about Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom before the public did, and the mentor-villain inversion, the man who built Peter’s tech coming back wearing the face of the Avengers’ greatest enemy, is the most obvious emotional engine Secret Wars could run on. A Doom versus Spider-Man core would let Marvel replay the Stark relationship as tragedy.
How credible is the claim?

| CORROBORATED BY | No second scooper yet; consistent with Marvel and Sony’s public Spider-Man-first strategy and with Holland’s confirmed Doomsday and Secret Wars involvement |
| WHAT’S CONFIRMED | Holland appears in both Avengers films; Secret Wars closes the saga in December 2027; Brand New Day is 2026’s biggest movie |
| WHAT ISN’T | Any plot detail, including who the protagonist of Secret Wars actually is |
| OUR TAKE | Directionally believable, and the commercial logic is overwhelming, but “protagonist” claims this early often flatten a big ensemble. 6/10. |
What about the rest of the Avengers: Secret Wars cast?
A Spider-Man spine would not shrink the ensemble. Doomsday’s D23 presentation confirmed Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter and Robert Downey Jr.’s Doom, alongside the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts and the legacy X-Men. Secret Wars is expected to widen that circle further, and production chatter is already swirling, including the disputed filming timeline we reported in Secret Wars filming started?. The realistic read: several arcs, one of which, if this report holds, ends the saga through Peter Parker’s eyes.
What happens next
Avengers: Doomsday arrives December 18, 2026, and how it treats Spider-Man, or whether Peter even appears before its final minutes, will be the first real test of this rumour. Expect Marvel to keep Secret Wars plot details sealed well into 2027, and expect other insiders to confirm or push back on the protagonist claim within the week. We will track every development, and every scoop about Holland’s role, as the Doomsday marketing ramp begins this fall.
