Just one day remain till Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania makes its big-screen premiere, and viewers continue to discover fresh reasons to shudder. The atmosphere in the theatres tomorrow will be nothing short of abundant, whether it’s sparked by the horrifying impact that Kang is expected to have, anticipation for those mouthwatering mid-credits moments, or worry that maybe the critics got this one right. The start of an arc for Cassie Lang, one of the MCU’s newest superheroes, is one of the more upbeat sources of excitement. It’s unknown if the daughter of the titular Avenger will be donning her Stature or Stinger mantle for Quantumania, but seeing the start of her journey towards Avengerhood will undoubtedly be one of the movie’s more enjoyable moments given some of its more serious themes and story issues.
We already know that Cassie is not exactly like her father in terms of her sense of fairness. In an interview with /Film, Quantumania director Peyton Reed noted that since we first met her in 2015’s Ant-Man, she has developed into her own person. Given Scott’s largely absentee presence for a significant portion of her life, she was able to forge a path that was distinctly her own because of the independent nature of her maturity.
“We inherited this fantastic idea from the events of Endgame, which is that Scott had Cassie for an additional five years. She is not a young girl anymore. A young woman, she is. Her journey to becoming a hero in her own right and the notion that she is not her father are both hinted at in this film. She has very different views on justice, the current problems facing the world, and the justice system itself. She also has a lot to say about her father. “Man, you’re signing books.” You ought to be doing this other stuff outside.”
We won’t hold our breath for much of a victory over Kang, but Cassie’s added firepower will undoubtedly be useful as Scott and company attempt to leave the Quantum Realm. Whether Quantumania’s events prove to be deadly or not, we can almost surely bank on the torch being passed to Cassie, providing a surefire ray of optimism in a movie that could be desperately in need of one. The enemy still has at least two more films’ worth of conquest to accomplish.
On February 17, cinemas will see Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumia.
