Agents Of SHIELD star confirms they had talks to appear in MCU movies

A prominent member of the Agents of SHIELD cast discussed making appearances in films set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel stated during the course of the previous year that The Defenders Saga on Netflix was part of the MCU canon. But the studio hasn’t done the same for the show that arguably had the strongest ties to the franchise. For example, throughout its seven seasons, Agents of SHIELD featured a number of characters from Marvel films and frequently responded to events from a number of MCU films, with Captain America: The Winter Soldier having a particularly significant influence on the series. One of the series’ heroes may have even gone straight to the movies. Adrianne Palicki, who starred in Mockingbird, told The Direct that she discussed starring in a spinoff series or making appearances in MCU films when she first joined Agents of SHIELD. In the end, Palicki did film a pilot for the spinoff of Mockingbird. Palicki thinks that the cancellation of Bobbi Morse’s solo series was a result of a bigger Marvel/ABC reorganization. Disney+’s Hawkeye had a Mockingbird Easter egg, but there are currently no plans for Mockingbird to make a comeback in any MCU films. See the complete quotation below:

“The conversation I had when I signed on actually to ‘Agents of SHIELD’ was either I was going to be participating in the films or have a spin-off. And we did a spin-off that we shot, which is actually great, but I think it was at the time where ABC was literally getting rid of all of their Marvel shows. Like, ‘Agent Carter’ got taken off the air, our show didn’t get picked up, ‘Agents of SHIELD’ was on the verge of syndication, so it stayed on.”

Palicki’s disclosure is intriguing. It is obvious that the series was originally created with that in mind, even if Marvel Studios has not yet asserted that Agents of SHIELD is canon to the MCU, as it did with Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and the Marvel series on Netflix. That reality was further reinforced by the appearance of characters like Nicky Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, in the program. As a result, Marvel believed that Palicki’s Mockingbird had the potential to make the leap from tiny to large screen. Engaging with Hawkeye, played by Jeremy Renner, may have made for a suitable narrative. Hawkeye and Mockingbird have been wed in the comics. The MCU chose a different route, with Clint and Laura Barton—who seemed to be SHIELD’s Agent 19 in Hawkeye—starting a family. It appears that the MCU chose to subtly designate Laura their Mockingbird, further separating the brand from Agents of SHIELD, as that is Mockingbird’s designation in the comics. Given that Hawkeye has hinted at a different trajectory for the character and that Palicki’s negotiations to appear in MCU films took place when she was cast as Mockingbird more than ten years ago, it becomes doubtful that the actress would return for any more MCU films.

I regret that Palicki’s Mockingbird was never able to be shown on a large screen. Her interactions with comic book characters like Hawkeye and Ka-Zar are appealing to me. It would have been amazing to have the program recognized in the MCU films through Bobbi Morse, who I also liked in Agents of SHIELD. Unfortunately, I believe that ship has long passed and we will not see Palicki’s Mockingbird again, which is unfortunate for Agents of SHIELD fans, since Marvel chose to create a spinoff that was never realized rather than starring her in a movie.
