Ariana DeBose promotes her Kraven the Hunter character on Sony. When the reporter inquired about DeBose’s involvement as Calypso in the upcoming Sony Spider-Man Universe movie, she was promoting her upcoming role in Disney’s Wish during an interview. Although DeBose declined to comment on whether her portrayal of Calypso will resemble that of her Marvel Comics counterpart, the Oscar winner hinted at some surprises for the faithful. DeBose stated, “I believe you should prepare for the unexpected.” Denny O’Neil created Calypso, who first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man in October 1980. The antagonist was a teenage Voodoo priestess from Haiti who sacrificed her sister. She then proceeded to make the concoction that endowed Kraven with feline strength, agility, and perception. Kraven and Calypso were regular adversaries of the Wall Crawler, sharing a same passion for violence, until Kraven took his own life. Later, Calypso attempted to spawn zombies in Hell’s Kitchen, which caught the interest of Daredevil, another Marvel character.

Beyond her possible love relationship with Kraven (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), who will be presented as an antihero in the future film, not much is known about DeBose’s portrayal of Calypso. J. C. Chandor, the director of Kraven, hinted that the film’s portrayal of the Spider-Man villain will be mostly sad. According to Chandor, “I know Sony doesn’t want me to start with this, but the story is a tragedy.” If you’ve been paying attention, you won’t feel that everything is going to work out perfectly when the film’s closing titles roll. Outside of Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Age of Ultron, Johnson plays Kraven in his second Marvel role. Johnson was given the lead part by Sony because of his success in the 2022 film Bullet Train. “We’re thinking of you for this thing,” the caller said. That’s when they introduced me to producer Matt Tolmach and director J.C. Chandor, and we clicked. Thus, it was a great blessing for me that Kraven was the next project, and working with Sony, the same company, was amazing,” Johnson remarked. Johnson plays the title warrior antihero in Chandor’s film Kraven, which was scripted by Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Richard Wenk and starred Russell Crowe as the antagonistic father who turned Johnson into a ruthless murderer. Aleksei Sytsevich / Rhino (Alessandro Nivola) and Dmitri Smerdyakov / Chameleon (Fred Hechinger) are two more iconic Spider-Man villains scheduled to make an appearance.
