Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s controversial finale continues to elicit strong opinions, as co-director Kemp Powers claims even his own family objected to it. Powers said in an interview he received criticism from his cousins for the way the conclusion was handled, which contained a cliffhanger to introduce the next sequel, Beyond the Spider-Verse. After watching the film, the director got furious letters from his cousins, which Powers dismissed. What the f***, man? was the text message I received from several of my cousins. Man, stop up! I exclaim as they say, “That ending!” Powers declared.
After his Multiversal journey, Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) tries to return home in the last scene of Across the Spider-Verse but ends himself in the wrong reality. Miles discovers the parallel reality he unintentionally enters doesn’t have a Spider-Man; instead, the Prowler of the realm is Brooklyn’s top predator. Before the screen goes black and the credits appear, Miles battles his Spider-Man and Prowler selves. Although it was intended to be a bridge into Beyond the Spider-Verse, the finale received mixed responses from fans who hoped for a more conclusive resolution, leaving spectators to speculate about Miles’ fate. One of the year’s biggest box office hits so far is Across the Spider-Verse. The summer hit earned $690 million worldwide on a $100 million budget, surpassing box office estimates and making nearly twice as much money as its predecessor, Into the Spider-Verse. However, controversy has surrounded the movie ever since it was made, from the reported unfavourable working conditions for animators to Gwen Stacy’s (Hailee Steinfeld) line modifications that were apparent after the film’s home distribution.
In order to protect the Multiverse from threats like that posed by the Spot (Jason Schwartzman), Miles and Gwen joined forces with the Spider-Society in the pivotal scene of Across the Spider-Verse. With 90 minutes of extras involving the cast and crew, Across the Spider-Verse gives viewers a unique behind-the-scenes look at how the animated film was created for its home release. Beyond the Spider-Verse will be co-directed by Powers, Joaquim Dos Santos, and Justin K. Thompson. The movie was originally scheduled for release in 2024, but Sony pulled it off the schedule for that year. The threequel will air “when it’s ready,” according to co-producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, while the actors and crew are keeping quiet about any specifics.
