Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds slyly discuss the MCU’s future after Deadpool and Wolverine

When Deadpool & Wolverine opens this summer, it is expected to significantly disrupt the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s unclear, though, if Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman will carry on wreaking havoc in the MCU beyond their titular roles in the next film. In an interview, actors Hugh Jackman and Reynolds—who play the claw-wielding mutant and the eponymous “Merc With a Mouth”—discussed whether or not they will return to their respective roles in upcoming Marvel films. The two slyly answered the question in their characteristically funny ways, with Reynolds saying, “I’m very nervous talking to you,” and Jackman saying, “I’ve never been so scared of what’s coming out of my mouth.”

After portraying their well-known roles during the 20th Century Fox era—Reynolds as Wade Wilson in the first two Deadpool films, and Jackman as the face of the X-Men film franchise—they will be making their MCU debuts in Deadpool & Wolverine. Since Jackman came out of retirement as Wolverine in 2022—despite Marvel CEO Kevin Feige’s advice to stay away—the actors and close friends have been making jokes about what would happen in Deadpool & Wolverine. This is because of how his previous attempt to play the antihero ended in the 2017 film Logan. Deadpool & Wolverine, the much awaited summer blockbuster of 2024, follows Reynolds’s character Wade Wilson as he is summoned from his sedate existence by the Time Variance Authority (TVA) to go on a revolutionary Multiversal quest. Wade calls on Wolverine for his expertise in rescuing lives. The excitement is understandable given that the newest Deadpool movie’s teaser broke MCU audience records. Marvel is hoping that the upcoming tentpole will turn the cinematic universe around following many critical and financial setbacks in 2023.

Reynolds and Jackman co-star in Deadpool & Wolverine with Jennifer Garner, Brianna Hildebrand, Karan Soni, and Morena Baccarin. There will be other celebrity cameos in the movie as well; much anticipated appearances by Halle Berry and Taylor Swift are among them. Prior to the film’s premiere, director Shawn Levy said that one returning member of the mutant squad will be featured in the teaser trailers for additional X-Men. Rob Liefeld, the writer of the Deadpool comic book, has hinted at a “mind-blowing” post-credits scene, in addition to the high stakes and appearances. Before its premiere, the movie will run a number of advertising initiatives. In the upcoming months, a teaser for an Avengers: Secret Wars anti-cell phone PSA and an NSFW popcorn bucket will be released.
