Although John Krasinski’s portrayal of Reed Richards in Doctor Strange 2 was very briefly onscreen, his Mister Fantastic persona was so brilliantly crafted that even his outfit was created to accentuate and enhance his talents. According to rumours, the book Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness: The Art of The Movie revealed the deeper significance of Mister Fantastic’s costume. Head of Visual Development at Marvel Studios, Ryan Meinerding, discussed the factors they took into account while turning Marvel heroes from the canon of comic books into films. He clarified that despite modifications to design or plot arc, it was crucial that MCU characters stay true to the comics. Because of this, they made an extra effort to make Reed Richards stand out in Doctor Strange 2. Meinerding stated, “In the case of Mister Fantastic, he’s one of those characters that has previously appeared on the big screen. Therefore, you’re attempting to think of something that seems timeless and intriguing while yet being contemporary enough to appear in an MCU film and unique from previous works. He said, “The intent of putting those extra stripes in there was to say that the black parts add structure to the costume and to his body, and the blue parts stretch.” He described the design of Reed Richards’s suit as both practical and symbolic.

Rewatching the scenario will let you to observe how skillfully these characters were adapted in Doctor Strange 2 given that Black Bolt, Captain Carter, Captain Marvel, and Professor X also showed up during the trial with the Illuminati. Every time we see someone from the beginning, Meinerding remarked, “it ends up feeling like a big obligation. You must do it correctly. Although it must be somewhat modernised, you also need to find something that would appeal to fans and feel true to the character. He agreed that members of the Illuminati needed to project a menacing style and demeanour, which is why Reed’s costume was more sombre and not retro. According to him, they are intended to appear a little more polished than some of our other hero pairings. Just the idea of becoming a member of The Illuminati. That team has an almost heavy quality. Therefore, with Reed, I was attempting to lean into something that seemed as like it was approaching the design task with the utmost seriousness. It wasn’t planned to be a direct throwback.
