Marvel Studios to conclude Kang storyline with “Avengers: Doomsday”; Robert Downey Jr. returns as Doctor Doom

Marvel Studios is reportedly planning to wrap up the Kang the Conqueror storyline in the MCU, with the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday” marking the conclusion of this narrative arc. During a recent episode of The Hot Mic, Jeff Sneider revealed that Marvel Studios will be concluding the Kang storyline, with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom rumored to be the one to kill Kang and the Council of Kangs. This significant shift in the MCU’s direction comes after the poor reception of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and the allegations against Jonathan Majors, leading Marvel to scrap the previously planned films “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” and “Secret Wars.” Instead, they are bringing back Downey Jr. to the MCU as Doctor Doom, with the script focusing on Doom’s creation of Battleworld.

“Avengers: Doomsday” is set to be a multiverse film, serving as the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga. The plot will follow Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, who, despite his villainous reputation, believes he is trying to save the multiverse from incursions. In his twisted logic, the only way for the multiverse to survive is to unify all universes in one place—Battleworld—under his rule. This vision of a unified multiverse under Doom’s control is central to the film’s narrative, as he sees this as the sole path to ensuring survival for everyone. The film is scheduled to begin filming in April 2025 in London, UK, and will wrap by August 2025. It will be directed by the Russo Brothers from a screenplay by Stephen McFeely.

The star-studded cast of “Avengers: Doomsday” includes a mix of familiar faces and new characters. Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as Doctor Doom, while Chris Evans returns as Nomad, Tom Holland as Spider-Man, and Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards. Other notable cast members include Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, Wyatt Russell as US Agent, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Wonder Man, Dafne Keen as Laura Kinney/X-23, Kelsey Grammer as Hank McCoy/Beast, and Channing Tatum as Gambit. Due to Holland’s busy schedule and other film commitments, some of the Spider-Man scenes in the film will be performed by a stunt double. Produced by Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, and the Russo Brothers through their AGBO banner, “Avengers: Doomsday” is set to be released on May 1, 2026, with “Avengers: Secret Wars” following on May 7, 2027.
