New “Core” team series requires rival X-Men leaders to cooperate

It was initially disclosed that there would be three “core” X-Men team series, with the other books acting as satellites surrounding those three core books, all three of which would be equally important, when Marvel’s X-Men relaunch, “From the Ashes,” was first announced. Marvel has already revealed information about the first two core series, X-Men by Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman and Uncanny X-Men by Gail Simone and David Marquez. Now, the company is revealing information on the third and final core book, Exceptional X-Men by Eve Ewing and Carmen Carnero. The show will revolve around longtime rivals Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost, who must collaborate to train a new generation of mutant superheroes in the post-Krakoan Age of the X-Men universe.

As previously mentioned, the X-Men have been living separate from the rest of humanity on their own island country, Krakoa, for the past few years. Orchis brought the Krakoan society to an abrupt end and temporarily turned the whole world against mutants in a way we have never seen outside of conceivable dystopian futures like Days of Future Past. During the conflict with Orchis, Kitty Pryde was made to perform a variety of extremely disturbing tasks, such as killing several Orchis operatives while adopting the evil Ogun’s teachings. Now that it is all over, Kitty just wants to be left alone. Naturally, the issue is that, in this new normal, where mutants are FORCED to coexist with humans once more, it is not a particularly safe time for mutants, especially not young ones who are still learning how to use their powers. For this reason, Kitty is compelled to come out of superhero retirement to assist in training three new mutants, who Marvel listed in a press release as follows:

“The metallic and whip-wielding Bronze, the emotion-stirring Axo, and the stealth-skilled fighter Melee!”

Since Kitty can’t handle this on her own, she reluctantly decides to work with Emma Frost, a longstanding competitor, to train these new mutants how to become superheroes. Exceptional X-Men is a series that focuses on the educational side of the X-Men, if X-Men is more about a strike team safeguarding mutantkind via whatever means necessary and Uncanny X-Men is more of a classic superhero book.
