Director Sam Raimi has replied to reports of his comeback to the Spider-Man film franchise. Tobey Maguire reprised his role as Peter Parker in the popular crossover picture Spider-Man: No Way Home, after his appearance in all three Spider-Man films directed by Sam Raimi. Meanwhile, Raimi returned to Marvel as the director of Doctor Strange: The Multiverse of Madness. There have been reports that Raimi and Maguire may rejoin to shoot a fourth Spider-Man picture, but neither the filmmaker nor Marvel have officially stated this. When CBR’s Kevin Polowy approached Raimi about the rumors at WonderCon, he put more light on them.
“Well, I haven’t heard about that yet,” Raimi responded when questioned directly about the reports. “I read it, but I haven’t started working on it yet. I mean, Marvel and Columbia have been so successful with the current Spider-Man films and the track record, and I doubt they’ll come back to me and say, ‘Well, guys, we can also tell that tale!’ I’m not sure, but I enjoy all of the new Spider-Man films. I enjoyed Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was quite powerful to see Tobey Maguire again in it.” When asked if Maguire would be interested in the reported fourth picture, Raimi replied, “I haven’t talked to Tobey about it, but maybe Marvel or Columbia Pictures have.” But I recently collaborated with Marvel on the film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So I am on good terms with them. If it was in the works, I am sure I would have heard about it. I guess so. I honestly don’t know.
While Raimi insists that he has never been approached formally about creating Spider-Man 4, his responses appear to indicate that he is receptive to the notion. It’s also telling that he thinks Maguire may have already been approached, indicating that Raimi believes it’s highly plausible. Time will tell if it happens, but statements from actor Thomas Haden Church, who portrayed Sandman in Spider-Man 3 and reprised the character in No Way Home, have fuelled these theories. There have been whispers that they would want me to do another Spider-Man, which I would do tomorrow, Church stated. “They never asked me to appear in any Marvel picture, but I believe Sam Raimi will do another Spider-Man with Tobey Maguire. That’s the one — I was really given the choice of doing Spider-Man 4 if there was going to be one. They had an opportunity for me to return. So, if that occurs, it will be amazing.”
