It’s possible that Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios want to begin production on the long-awaited Spider-Man 4, which would see Tom Holland reprise his role as the title character, in late 2024. Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are apparently aiming to start production on Spider-Man 4 this autumn, possibly in September or October, according to insider reports. Zendaya, who starred in Dune: Part Two, will now focus on the unnamed Spider-Man sequel this year, as she is anticipated to return as MJ, following the indefinite postponement of HBO’s Euphoria Season 3 production. Furthermore, the publication mentioned that the pursuit of the next director to replace Jon Watts is presently in progress, with Justin Lin, the director of Fast & Furious, reportedly being considered as one of the potential candidates to direct the fourth entry. In 2022, following the critical and commercial success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which brought in over $1.9 billion at the worldwide box office, rumours about Spider-Man 4 started to surface. Executives from Sony and Marvel have previously hinted at their ambitious intentions for the franchise’s future, but neither company has made any formal pronouncements regarding the endeavour. The conflicting creative views of Sony and Marvel Studios for the plot of Spider-Man 4 might be the reason for the project’s delay. For the upcoming film, Sony allegedly wants to create another “huge” multiverse extravaganza, but Kevin Feige, the creator of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, wants to tell a “more grounded” Spider-Man narrative.
According to a recent source, Holland’s portrayal of the wallcrawler may have a new angle in Spider-Man 4, as the character’s moniker “continues to consume Peter’s life little by little.” Since the storyline of the sequel seems to be similar to Matt Reeves’ 2022 film The Batman, it is currently uncertain if the creative team will decide to go in this way. One of the other heroes rumoured to make an appearance in Spider-Man 4 is Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, who made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in No Way Home. The official cast and crew of the fourth installment, aside from Holland and Zendaya, were kept a secret. In November 2023, Holland declared that he is in fact in continuous communication with Marvel Studios over Spider-Man 4, adding that the project could only forward provided they could find a means to honour the cherished character. “I feel very protective over Spider-Man,” he stated. “I want to preserve his legacy, and I feel really fortunate that we were able to work on a series that, in my opinion, is quite uncommon—one that became better and more popular with each film. I hereby promise not to create another one just for the pleasure of doing so. It must be worthwhile for the character to invest their time on.”
