The director of the Marvel Cinematic Universe remake discusses why he chose Galactus rather than putting the characters from The Fantastic Four: First Steps against Doctor Doom. After years of waiting, Marvel Studios is finally preparing to introduce the Fantastic Four characters into the MCU. The Fantastic Four: First Steps film, however, will follow an existing version of the team and confront them against their second most renowned nemesis, rather than recounting the genesis tale. Matt Shakman went into further depth in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly on why Doctor Doom isn’t the first major antagonist to confront Marvel’s First Family in The Fantastic Four: First Steps in the MCU film. Shakman explained that he thought the movie Doctor Doom vs. the Fantastic Four had done anything enough:

Doom’s a great character, but he takes up a lot of air. Other film adaptations have done both an origin story and Doom. We’re doing neither, and that allows us to look at them from a fresh perspective.

Whether it’s Fox’s original Fantastic Four films or the highly acclaimed 2015 reboot, the legendary group of heroes and several of its adversaries have had a very mixed reaction when it comes to live-action Fantastic Four. This is particularly true for live-action Doctor Doom, but it doesn’t alter the fact that Shakman is correct in pointing out that Victor von Doom has had many chances to be explored. Victor is not required for the introduction of the main heroes in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which offers the MCU’s ensemble a new perspective. It’s also important to keep in mind that the sole live-action portrayal of Galactus was in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, when he received a very subpar portrayal of his comic book counterpart. They are presented with a huge threat from the outset by eliminating Doctor Doom and allowing Galactus to be the first major antagonist to go out against the Fantastic Four in the MCU. Galactus from The Fantastic Four: First Steps has already been unveiled, thus the MCU adaptation is unquestionably headed in the correct direction.

Everything Shakman said about Doctor Doom is accurate; if the Fantastic Four had previously had to deal with Victor in the upcoming third reboot of this franchise, it would have been incredibly redundant. Even though it won’t happen in 2025, Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of the legendary villain will allow Marvel’s First Family to battle Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. of just a few months, the public will be able to witness firsthand how Galactus, the main nemesis of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, is handled.
