Scott Waugh, the director of Expendables, is a tremendous fan of Spider-Man. In a special conversation, Waugh discusses his lifelong love of Marvel’s “Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man.” Waugh first became interested in the wall-crawler when his stuntman father, Fred Waugh, acted as Nicholas Hammond’s stand-in on the CBS television show Spider-Man in the late 1970s. The filmmaker wants a shot at directing a future Spider-Man movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in addition to having the character tattooed on his arm. Waugh pointed to a large Spidey tattoo on his shoulder and stated, “I’m going to show you.” “Spider-Man is standing here. In the television series, my father played the first Spider-Man. So, I believe I was born with a love of comic books. I own the original Spider-Man outfit from the television series, and I would be beyond pleased to be a part of anything involving Spider-Man, but especially a Spider-Man movie.
Waugh began his career as a stuntman for popular Hollywood films including The Italian Job and Bad Boys II, following in his father’s footsteps. Waugh made his feature film debut in 2012 with the military action movie Act of Valour, for which he was recognised as one of the “10 Directors to Watch” at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Before being hired to helm Expend4bles, Waugh was the director of Netflix’s Hidden Strike, which topped the streaming service’s charts in its first week of release and starred Jackie Chan and John Cena.
While Tom Holland-starring Spider-Man 4 is still in the works, Waugh aims to follow in the footsteps of Sam Raimi and Jon Watts by taking a go at the character on the big screen. The director’s skill in creating exciting action sequences in films like Expend4bles may support his claim. An all-star cast of action movie veterans, including Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, and Tony Jaa, are present in the sequel. Alan Ng, the stunt coordinator for Waugh, drew inspiration from the cast members’ prior work to create some thrilling action scenes. In order to see what the other actors hadn’t done previously and what kind of approach would work best for them, Ng stated, “Yeah, we watched all the previous Expendables and a lot of the films starring the other actors.”
