Actress Julia Garner discusses the potential for a Silver Surfer spinoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. With The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which opens in cinemas this summer, Marvel’s First Family will finally make their appearance in the MCU series, marking the start of Phase 6 for the studio. Although the Silver Surfer will be included in the MCU timeline, Shalla-Bal will play the role rather than Norrin Radd. Garner recently discussed the future of Silver Surfer and her role in The Fantastic Four: First Steps in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. When asked if she would be interested in starring in a Shalla-Bal project following her 2025 MCU debut, Garner responded as follows, acknowledging that there had long been discussions for a Silver Surfer spinoff movie:
A hundred percent, I would love to do that. The Silver Surfer is such a cool character, and I feel like it’s so rare to be presented with any sort of mystery in this day and age. So any kind of energy like that on screen, I know I want to see that, so that would be awesome if that happened.
The notion is undoubtedly made more feasible by Garner’s openness to a Silver Surfer spinoff, but there are a few important considerations to ponder in this respect. First off, Marvel Studios has not said that they are working on a Silver Surfer film, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t thinking about it. However, Marvel Studios is presently concentrating on Avengers: Doomsday and the other Phase 6 projects, so even if they want to launch a Silver Surfer spinoff after The Fantastic Four: First Steps, they almost cannot fit it within The Multiverse Saga. However, Marvel Studios may consider a spinoff in Phase 7 if the response to Garner’s casting debut in The Fantastic Four: First Steps is favorable. After their initial appearance, the Fantastic Four characters are probably going to play an even larger part in the MCU, and Shalla-Bal may be one of them. In order to give Marvel Studios more time to properly craft a standalone tale for Garner’s character, it could be wise to postpone a Silver Surfer spinoff until after Phase 6.
Garner seems more than willing to expand Silver Surfer’s role in the MCU, based solely on her remarks on a possible spinoff. A Silver Surfer spinoff might examine Shalla-Bal’s transformation into the Herald of Galactus or perhaps adapt her comedic relationship with Norrin Radd, who may make his franchise debut at that point. This could be a full-length movie, television series, or even an MCU Special Presentation. For now, though, fans may see The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which introduces the Silver Surfer to the MCU this summer.
