The conclusion of Marvel Studios’ What If…? has raised concerns since it skips over some of the finest multiversal storylines in the MCU, including one that has been demanded from the start of the animated series. In July 2022, it was revealed that Jeffrey Wright’s mysterious Watcher will return for a third season of What If…? When What If…? season 3 arrives on December 22, eight new episodes will explore new parallel universes, but the much awaited third season is also expected to oddly conclude the series. In addition to keeping up with Captain Carter and Kahhori, who collaborated on the dramatic end of What If…? season 2, season 3 will feature new iterations of Bucky Barnes’ Winter Soldier, Shang-Chi, Agatha Harkness, and Sam Wilson’s Captain America, among many others. What If…? is coming to an end, even though it appears like Marvel Studios will always have ideas for the animated series. Some of the MCU’s most intriguing scenarios, including one that many have desired since What If…? was initially revealed in April 2019, will sadly not be explored.

Since the inception of What If…?, fan theories and conjecture related to variations of the title, “What If… The Other Half Had Been Snapped?,” have been common. This alludes to the scene in Avengers: Infinity War where half the universe’s population was turned to dust as Thanos, the Mad Titan, snapped his fingers with the finished Infinity Gauntlet. It would have been the ideal plot point for What If…?, as many people are curious about what would have occurred if Thanos had destroyed the other half of the universe. Thanos snapping his fingers has mostly gone unnoticed, despite the fact that What If…? has given twists to some of the most famous and unforgettable plots in the MCU. The genesis of the Avengers, Peter Quill’s celestial beginnings, Doctor Strange’s misuse of the Time Stone, and Steve Rogers’ metamorphosis into Captain America have all been examined. The fact that Thanos snapping his fingers—possibly the most significant event in the MCU—hasn’t been featured is unfortunate since it might have made for an entertaining What If…? episode and would have satisfied fans’ desires.

Fortunately, the original six Avengers survived Thanos’ use of the Infinity Stones in Avengers: Infinity War, allowing 2019’s Avengers: Endgame to emotionally conclude many of its stories. This would not have been conceivable if the other half had been broken, but it would probably imply that characters like Natasha Romanoff, Steve Rogers, and Tony Stark would still be part of the MCU. That is, of course, if someone from the opposing faction had figured out how to undo the destruction that Thanos had wrought, which might not have been possible. Tony Stark’s ingenuity made it possible for Scott Lang’s plan to utilize time travel to obtain the Infinity Stones from the past in order to undo Thanos’ snap to succeed when he returned from the Quantum Realm in Avengers: Endgame. It’s possible that the Blip would have lasted much longer than just five years because it’s doubtful that anyone from the other team could have imagined utilizing time travel, much less figured out how. What If…? would have been a great way to examine the enormous implications of this for the MCU, but season 3 is once again neglecting this subject.
