In the most recent Deadpool & Wolverine teaser trailer, Ryan Reynolds pays tribute to the late comedian John Candy. A teaser featuring little video debuted on Sunday, ahead of the release of a larger trailer on Monday. It contained the reappearance of a repeated reference to Candy from the previous Deadpool movies. Reynolds’ Wade Wilson may be seen reading The Canadian Mounted in the teaser. In the acclaimed comedy Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Candy’s character reads the same book, and Reynolds subtly pays homage to it in the earlier Deadpool movies. Reynolds has expressed his deep admiration for Candy in the past, and this is evident in the nods he gives her.
“When I was younger, I was really, really obsessed with John Candy,” Reynolds admitted on the Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman. “I still do, too. Steve Martin, among many other individuals that left Saturday Night Live. I’ll just duplicate them if I’m stuck in a scenario or can’t figure out how to get in. That Neal Page, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles kind of Martin’s character is a bit of an overachiever, aggressively unimpressed figure. I really adore that, and I never have enough of it.” The identical book is prominently displayed in Deadpool 2, and Reynolds said that he had the book remade so the cover would resemble Candy’s from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Wade Wilson is shown holding the identical book that he had in the previous film, however Reynolds said that the exact cover was deleted from the final edit, making that specific appearance less recognizable.
“That book is mine,” Reynolds remarked. “I had it replicated for Deadpool, but it’s not the same one he’s carrying. And in other situations, I’m holding it beneath my arm. It has never, in my opinion, been captured on video. But the things you try to remember are the tiny ones. those who aided in your development to reach this point.” With the upcoming film, viewers can expect a lot more exciting surprises. Numerous significant appearances are anticipated, including the widely circulated theory that Taylor Swift will portray an X-Men character. The John Candy allusion makes it clear that there’s no way of knowing how many Easter eggs fans will have to search for concealed in the backdrop.
