The Russo Brothers hint at the extent to which the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be adapted from the original as Avengers: Secret Wars is based on the Marvel comic of the same name. With the release of Avengers: Doomsday in 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027, the MCU is coming closer to completing The Multiverse Saga. After their huge success with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Anthony and Joe Russo will return to the MCU to direct the two Avengers sequels, helping to wrap out Phase 6. In a new interview with TechRadar, the Russo Brothers were asked about the direction of Avengers: Secret Wars while they are getting ready for Avengers: Doomsday. When they were asked about how much of the Secret Wars comic books the MCU is looking to adapt, Joe Russo gave the following response:
Well, we always create our own version of the story. So, we use the comics as loose inspiration. But, you know, I grew up on the original run. That’s something that got me into Marvel comic books. The Hickman run is also fantastic very different from each other in a lot of ways, so we’ll draw inspiration from both of them.
Historically, Marvel Studios has included their own interpretations of some of the most well-known plots from key Marvel Comics issues into the MCU. While the MCU films or television series have a different strategy, the titles are frequently utilized only as names. The Russo Brothers, however, obviously wish to respect the essence of the Secret Wars comics while also giving it the MCU spin with the Avengers: Secret Wars tale. The Russo Brothers want to make sure that there are surprises along the way to give Avengers: Secret Wars its own trajectory in the MCU, which makes sense given the significant ramifications from Jim Shooter and Jonathan Hickman’s separate Secret Wars arcs. There will undoubtedly be some unusual twists, especially given the way the Avengers: Secret Wars ensemble is being assembled, even if the final outcome will probably be the same as how the current Secret Wars comic ended.
The Russo Brothers’ recent remarks in Avengers: Secret Wars are consistent with the predictions that the MCU may undergo a soft reset following the Phase 6 finale, which will combine several timelines into one. However, with the former preparing to begin production this year, the more pressing question at hand is which MCU performers will ultimately return for both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The world will have to wait patiently for Avengers: Secret Wars to discover how the MCU will change.
