Although there has been little information released regarding the upcoming animated MCU film, Marvel Studios has announced that What If…? season 3 is in progress. With each episode set in a different alternate reality across the MCU’s multiverse—a concept first introduced in Phase 4’s Loki season 1—Marvel Studios Animation’s anthology series, which is based on Marvel Comics’ well-known and expansive What If…? series, explores how the MCU would have changed if previous storylines had transpired differently. On August 11, 2021, What If…? season 1 debuted, bringing back over 50 MCU stars who reprised their parts in nine episodes. While What If…? season 2 adds more, such 1988’s Avengers, a Sakaaran Iron Man, and the original MCU character Kahhori, season 1 introduced alternative heroes like Captain Carter, T’Challa’s Star-Lord, and a wicked Strange Supreme. The second season of What If…? debuted on December 22, 2023, and lasted for nine days straight throughout the holiday season. Jeffrey Wright’s mysterious Watcher, who will also make a comeback in season 3, tells the story of every action in the series.
During D23 Brazil, an official trailer for the third season of What If…? was unveiled, showcasing several heroes and plotlines that will be covered. Most intriguingly, the teaser states that it will be the third and last season of What if…? and provides a release date. The program has been a success for the MCU since it showcases an amazing animation technique and allows it to explore the mulitverse in entertaining ways.
It has been officially announced that What If…? season three will debut on December 22, 2024, only one year after season two. With one episode debuting on December 22 and subsequent episodes releasing every day until December 29, the third and final season of What If…? appears to use the same release schedule as season 2. There’s one intriguing aspect to What If…? The third season consists of eight episodes, one fewer than the first two seasons. It’s unclear why it will be a little shorter, but considering how lengthy each episode is, it could wind up being longer altogether.
What If…? season 2 included more characters and adventures from the Multiverse Saga, whereas season 1 concentrated on adapted narratives mostly from the MCU’s Infinity Saga. This raises the possibility that a large number of the stories in What If…? season 3 have not yet been adapted into live-action. Similar to the past two seasons, season three of What If…? will include a diverse cast of individuals in a range of multiverse locations and circumstances. For instance, a group of Avengers will be seen piloting mechs to battle Hulk-like creatures, while Shang-Chi will be examined in a Western context.
It’s clear that these characters and their variants are important to the MCU.
The addition of several intriguing individuals to What If…? season 3 is one particularly intriguing theme. White Vision, who has only been seen in the previous two WandaVision episodes and will be extensively explored in Vision Quest, is seen in the teaser. After having her own program, Agatha All Along, and making appearances on WandaVision, Agatha Harkness appears to be in season 3. It’s obvious that the MCU values these characters and their variations. Storm’s appearance in the teaser, referring to herself as the Goddess of Thunder and brandishing Mjölnir, was one of the biggest surprises. The X-Men’s eventual integration into the main MCU universe is only a step away from this. Despite the absence of stars like Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, and Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, and Natasha Romanoff, respectively, over fifty actors from the MCU’s history returned for What If…? season 1. After 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, the trio stepped down from their roles, but fresh actors might take their place thanks to the multiverse’s power.
