The Marvels, the newest movie from Marvel Studios, had a record-breaking domestic second weekend. The Marvels saw a 78-80% decline at the box office during their second weekend, making it Marvel’s worst-ever second-weekend decline. This would also be the worst opening for a Hollywood superhero film, having only been released nine days ago. The previous record, which fell 69%, belonged to the highly acclaimed Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The Hunger Games offshoot The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (approx. $46-47 million) and Trolls Band Together (est. $30 million), which both debuted this week, are predicted to gross more than $9–10 million this weekend, behind The Marvels.

The Marvels received unimpressive reviews upon its premiere on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 52% rating. The general impression was that the film featured strong action and humour, but a weak villain and problematic writing. The Marvels is a fun addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with fun characters and a fast-paced, exciting tale. The film did better with the general public, debuting at 85%. With a budget of nearly $200 million, The Marvels has only made $120 million so far; it’s unclear what this means for the movie’s chances of success. Vellani is expected to be a big star in the series, so working with The Young Avengers might be the key to balancing her stardom with a suitable film adaptation. However, this would coincide with Marvel’s efforts to bring back some of its more established actors, since Robert Downey Jr. is rumoured to have already consented to an Iron Man reunion. In general, superhero pictures are having trouble making money at the box office.

The Marvels, which is billed as follows: “Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence,” is being distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. However, as a result of unforeseen events, Carol is left to bear the weight of an unstable cosmos. Her talents get intermingled with those of Jersey City superfan Kamala Khan, also known as Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece Captain Monica Rambeau, a S.A.B.E.R. astronaut, when her responsibilities take her to an anomalous portal connected to a Kree revolutionary.
