Before things changed, it was really planned for three characters that had been rumoured to feature in Spider-Man: No Way Home to be a part of the big crossover movie. Three distinct Spider-Mans—Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland—united from various continuity in the popular film. Since then, screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers have confirmed in the recently released book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios that Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) from Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man films, as well as Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) and Aunt May (Sally Field) from Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy, were once included in the script. Nevertheless, Mary Jane, Aunt May, and Gwen Stacy were fired because the authors thought the character appearances were becoming too frequent. The excerpt states that Sommers and McKenna originally wrote versions of the story that included Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy, Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson, and Sally Field’s Aunt May. However, they eventually decided that the story was already too long and that the only female characters who would have significant screen time were MJ played by Zendaya and Aunt May played by Marisa Tomei. None of the actors could read a locked script since the screenplay was always changing, and they all signed on for the movie because they trusted director Jon Watts, producer Amy Pascal, and president of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige.
“I am aware of those rumours. I’m not involved; I’m not sure whether I’m supposed to say anything. I’m not sure how you’re expected to react as a former student,” Stone had previously stated to MTV News before to the movie’s premiere. In a lighthearted interview with Total Film magazine, Dunst addressed the rumours as well, saying that the directors “can’t put an old girl in there.” “I’m not in that movie, no,” she said, laughing. I am aware that there are rumours. No, I’m the only one who isn’t included.” Following the release of No Way Home, Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, also discussed why these characters weren’t in the movie. He expressed the same issue at the time, stating that the story should take precedence over cameos, fearing that an excessive number of appearances might ultimately detract from the film’s plot. “People will understand when they see the movie,” Feige stated in a 2021 interview with the New York Times. “The tale is what matters. For Amy and Jon Watts, the director of the film, as well as our writers, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, it was important that Peter Parker’s last year of high school not be overshadowed by the chaos that results from his meeting with Doctor Strange. That very well may have occurred. And for that reason, the film does not have an additional twenty characters.”
