Before Doctor Doom, before Robert Downey Jr. put on the green hood, there was another Avengers movie. A bigger, weirder, time-bending one built entirely around a villain Marvel has since erased from its own release calendar. It was called Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and it is the most fascinating movie the MCU never made.

What was Avengers: The Kang Dynasty?
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was announced by Kevin Feige on stage at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022 as the fifth Avengers film, the penultimate chapter of the Multiverse Saga. It was slated for May 2025, to be followed a year later by Avengers: Secret Wars. Destin Daniel Cretton, fresh off Shang-Chi, was set to direct, and Jeff Loveness, writer of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, was hired to script it.
The whole point was in the title. This was going to be Kang the Conqueror’s movie, the payoff to every “He Who Remains,” every variant, every TVA breadcrumb Marvel had been planting since Loki season one. Jonathan Majors was being positioned as the Thanos of the next era.
What was the original Kang Dynasty plot?
Marvel never released an official synopsis, so everything we have comes from writers and scoopers talking after the fact. The picture they paint is wild. The film reportedly opened not with the heavy hitters but with the next generation, a scrappy team of Young Avengers stumbling into a war they did not understand.

From there the scope exploded. Reports pointed to a Council of Kangs and multiple variants, names like Immortus, Rama-Tut and Centurion, with the true Conqueror returning from beyond to punish his own duplicates and ascend as He Who Remains. Earth would be conquered. The survivors would be scattered across realities, setting the table for a Secret Wars where a Beyonder-level threat waited in the Void. Here is the kicker that Marvel fans love most: even in the Kang version, Doctor Doom was reportedly waiting in the wings, teased as the figure Kang had removed from the timeline to guarantee his own reign. Doom was always the endgame. Kang was just the door.
Who was in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty?
Because the film leaned on the youth movement, the rumored roster read like a Young Avengers launch pad: Kamala Khan, Cassie Lang, Kate Bishop, Billy and Tommy Maximoff, Riri Williams and America Chavez, folded in alongside the surviving core Avengers. It would have been the moment the MCU formally passed the torch to its next generation, something the current slate is still trying to figure out how to do.
And at the center of it all, Jonathan Majors as Kang, a villain Marvel had already introduced across Loki, Quantumania and beyond. The infrastructure was fully built. Then it all came down.
Why was Avengers: The Kang Dynasty cancelled?
The short version: the plan collapsed around its lead actor. Following Jonathan Majors’ legal issues and conviction in late 2023, Marvel cut ties with him, and suddenly the studio had two enormous tentpole films built around a villain it could no longer use.
Cretton stepped away from the director’s chair to focus on other projects, and the Kang-centric scripts were effectively shelved. Rather than recast one of the most legally complicated roles in Hollywood, Marvel made the boldest pivot in its history. How did Kang Dynasty become Avengers: Doomsday?
At San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024, Marvel walked out its answer in person. Avengers 5 was no longer The Kang Dynasty. It was Avengers: Doomsday, with Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU not as Tony Stark but as Doctor Doom, and the Russo Brothers back in the director’s chairs. The internet lost its mind, and honestly, it deserved to.

What survived into Doomsday and Secret Wars?
More than you might think. The multiverse-collapse framework, the “scattered survivors” idea that fuels Battleworld, and crucially Doom himself as the ultimate threat all appear to have carried over. Marvel essentially kept the destination, the endgame of a saga, and swapped the driver from Kang to Doom. That is why so much of the Kang leak material still rhymes with what we are hearing about Doomsday now.

What happens next
We will likely never see Avengers: The Kang Dynasty as it was drawn up, and that is part of what makes it so tantalizing. It sits in the same ghostly hall as the original Quantumania plans and every other version of the MCU that almost was. What we get instead is Doomsday, a movie carrying the DNA of a story it replaced.
