A 2007 Marvel film error is made much more difficult to avoid with the latest Fantastic Four update for the MCU.

According to Marvel’s most recent update, The Fantastic Four: First Steps could make the same crucial error as Fox’s Fantastic Four movies. Marvel’s First Family may finally produce a fantastic movie, which is why MCU viewers have been waiting so long for The Fantastic Four to enter this realm. Even though Tim Story’s Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer have their acolytes, the films weren’t huge hits with viewers or reviewers. Even yet, they did better than Josh Trank’s utterly disastrous 2015 remake. There are plenty of reasons to be hopeful, since the MCU represents The Fantastic Four’s greatest chance at a fantastic movie. Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bacharach are among the A-list cast members of the picture, which was directed by Matt Shakman, a gifted filmmaker with a strong Marvel track record. Ralph Ineson’s role as Galactus, a villain whose MCU debut has long been awaited, is an intriguing addition to the roster. Although Galactus’ future in the MCU is uncertain, the most recent Fantastic Four: First Steps plot description indicates that Marvel may make the same error Fox did with this antagonist.

More details will be released when the July 2025 launch date for Fantastic Four: First Steps draws near. But Marvel now released the movie’s initial synopsis, which contains further story clues. The primary antagonist, Galactus, has been confirmed, and his herald will be Julia Garner’s Silver Surfer.

“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” presents Marvel’s First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ben Grimm/The Thing—as they take on their most difficult task to date, set against the colorful backdrop of a retro-futuristic world reminiscent of the 1960s. They must protect Earth from a hungry cosmic deity named Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his mysterious Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner), forcing them to strike a balance between their heroic responsibilities and the strength of their familial ties. It becomes quite personal as if Galactus’ scheme to eat the entire planet and all of its inhabitants weren’t already terrible enough.

The fact that Galactus will play the main antagonist in the movie is thrilling, but this narrative raises some questions. Many fans would want to see Galactus, one of the MCU’s most well-known and formidable villains, play a bigger role following Fantastic Four. Galactus may be a one-time villain, like his appearance in Rise of the Silver Surfer, if the crew destroys him. Marvel must find a means to bring him back since he is too strong to be a one-time antagonist. Among the most terrible versions of a Marvel character is Fox’s Galactus. With the removal of his recognizable purple outfit and menacing gigantic size, the studio transformed him into a massive cloud that devours planets. Many comic book fans who had been waiting a long time to see Galactus in live-action were incensed by the contentious choice. Additionally, it meant that Silver Surfer had a far more important role in the movie than Galactus, the primary antagonist.

Thankfully, the MCU is taking a different approach and has chosen Ineson to portray this role. The booming voice of Ineson, who starred in movies like The Witch and The First Omen, is ideal for Galactus. In many performances, he is terrifying due to his menacing presence. Marvel has done a terrific job casting the character, but it’s even better because Galactus will be human instead than cloud-like. During Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con during the summer, the enormous adversary was shown peaking through a glass to hint at Galactus’ shape. Only his eye and a little of his face were visible due to his immense size. This suggests that in addition to being human, he will be comic book-sized and a significant danger to the Fantastic Four. One of the most renowned villains in MCU history, Galactus will tower above the world of the Fantastic Four.

Fantastic Four: First Steps might not be Galactus’ final MCU endeavor, even if he loses. Due to the parallel reality in which Marvel’s Fantastic Four is situated, there may be another Galactus in the MCU or one that is produced in the future. Additionally, there is a chance that there is another Galactus in the multiverse, which would cause issues for the Avengers: Secret Wars plot. Marvel may bring him back in a variety of ways, and ideally the MCU will utilize him more than once. Galactus may also make a comeback since the MCU might wish to present a new Silver Surfer. According to reports, Garner is portraying Shalla-Bal, a female version distinct from the character that most fans are accustomed to, Norrin Radd. The future of the MCU may include Radd, but Galactus must accompany him. Galactus might be a bother in the MCU for some time, and Marvel’s First Family will have a difficult battle with him in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
