Since Jon Bernthal was announced to return as Frank Castle/The Punisher in Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again, fans have been clamouring for photographs of the actor in costume. After several months of waiting, various images of Bernthal donning the Punisher gear and filming alongside Charlie Cox’s Daredevil have surfaced online. The X account @DDevilUpdates shared many photographs from the set of Daredevil: Born Again, showing a battered and bleeding Punisher wearing his skull vest. Additional photographs indicated that Bernthal was shooting with Cox, who was dressed as the eponymous Man Without Fear, implying that the two will collaborate in the new series. The social media account also uploaded a quick set video of Punisher and Daredevil protecting their ears while an explosion can be heard in the background. The set photographs come only a few days after a Marvel fan posted a selfie of herself with the actor, which appeared to be shot during a production break.
Bernthal will reprise his role as Frank Castle/The Punisher in Born Again in March 2023. While details about The Punisher’s role in the upcoming Disney+ series remain undisclosed, a set video suggests that the character will be responsible for the killing of the new superhero White Tiger. However, because just the skull vest was shown in the video, it’s conceivable that Frank Castle is being framed, forcing him to link up with Daredevil to discover who murdered White Tiger. As always, unless Marvel Studios confirms it, fans should take this with a grain of salt. Following its creative makeover, Born Again will be a direct continuation of Netflix’s three-season Daredevil series. This fresh creative vision has resulted in the return of numerous fan-favorite characters from Netflix’s Daredevil, including as Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page and Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson. Born Again will also continue themes from the previous Marvel Spotlight series Echo, such as Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk/Kingpin campaigning for mayor of New York City.
With Marvel Studios firmly adopting Netflix’s Defenders Saga as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon, fans have speculated on who else may appear in Born Again, with many hoping to see Elektra Natchios return. Élodie Yung, who played Elektra in Daredevil Season 2 and The Defenders, reportedly said she would “gladly replay this part,” encouraging fans to “Ask Mr. Marvel” about bringing her back. Daredevil cast members confirmed thus far include Bernthal, Cox, D’Onofrio, Woll, and Henson. Wilson Bethel stars as Benjamin Poindexter/Bullseye, Margarita Levieva as Heather Glenn, Michael Gandolfini as Daniel Blade, Sandrine Holt as Vanessa Fisk (replacing Ayelet Zurer), Nikki M. James as Kirsten McDuffie, Genneya Walton as BB Urich, Clark Johnson as Cherry, Arty Froushan as Buck Cashman, and Zabryna Guevara as Sheila Rivera. Michael Gaston, Marc Geller, and Harris Yulin are cast in unspecified roles. The serial murderer Muse is also likely to appear, though Marvel has yet to reveal who will play the character.
