We finally have a real clue about how Robert Downey Jr is being turned into Doctor Doom, and it is not simply a man standing inside a metal mask. In a new Empire cover story, Joe and Anthony Russo pulled back the curtain on their Avengers Doomsday villain, and the honest answer is part live performance, part digital wizardry.
Doctor Doom has been the single biggest question mark hanging over Marvel’s next Avengers movie ever since RDJ walked out in that green hood at Comic Con. Now the directors are finally teasing how the trick is actually being pulled off, and it says a lot about how seriously Marvel is taking this villain.
So how is Doctor Doom being created?
According to the Russos, Downey is doing the heavy lifting in the flesh first, and the effects team builds on top of that afterwards. Anthony Russo framed it as a two step process where the performance comes first and the technology sweetens it later.

Joe Russo kept it vaguer, calling the approach “a combination of things” where digital effects do a lot of quiet work. In plain terms, this is not a fully computer generated Doom replacing Downey. It is Downey acting the part, then a digital layer refining the face, the armour and the movement on a second pass.
What that digital layer actually means
This matters because Doctor Doom spends most of his time behind a mask, so the usual Marvel trick of letting a famous face sell the emotion is off the table. The digital layer gives the Russos room to tweak how the mask reads on screen, from the tilt of the head to the way the metal catches the light, without asking Downey to nail every micro expression under a rigid prop.
It also hints at just how much money and attention is going into this character. You do not build a bespoke digital pass for a bit part. Doom is the spine of this movie, and the process the Russos describe is the kind of investment Marvel reserves for a villain it wants to carry the next two Avengers films.

With the face hidden, everything rides on the voice and the body. Recent footage from the special look has already given Doom a distinct voice and a very deliberate accent, and that is by design. If you cannot see the actor smirk, you have to hear the menace instead, which is a completely different acting challenge from the fast talking Tony Stark we watched for a decade.
The Russos clearly see Doom as far more than a standard bad guy. In a foreword they wrote for a reprint of Jonathan Hickman’s Time Runs Out, one of the comic runs feeding into this era, they summed up the character in a single loaded line.
Doom is not just an adversary. He is ambition and fear woven together.
