In a new Thunderbolts TV spot, we get a closer look at Geraldine Viswanathan’s enigmatic character, and all signs indicate that she is portraying a fan-favorite member of the Thunderbolts from the comic books. Shortly after last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, a video posted to the Marvel Entertainment YouTube channel confirmed that Viswanathan is playing a character named “Mel” in Thunderbolts*. This revelation has sparked significant interest among fans, who have been quick to speculate about her role.
The Drive-Away Dolls star has previously described her character as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s “little right-hand man.” This clue, combined with the new TV spot featuring Viswanathan wearing what appears to be a “songbird” necklace, has led fans to conclude that she is likely playing the MCU’s version of Melissa Gold, also known as Songbird. This character, originally known as Screaming Mimi, made her debut in Marvel Two-in-One #54 in 1979 and was created by Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio, and John Byrne. She later became the superhero Songbird after joining the Thunderbolts.
While it remains to be seen if Viswanathan’s character will possess the same supersonic sound abilities as her comic book counterpart, this casting choice suggests another instance of Marvel Studios drawing from relatively obscure characters with significant ties to the Thunderbolts. The focus of the Thunderbolts movie seems to be on reimagining these characters, potentially without their original powers. The film will feature an unconventional team of antiheroes, including Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, and John Walker, who must navigate a dangerous mission orchestrated by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. With a star-studded cast led by Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Thunderbolts is set to be a thrilling addition to the MCU, scheduled for release on May 2, 2025.
