Insomniac just dropped the trailer we have been waiting eighteen months for. Marvel Wolverine finally has a Game Features Trailer, and it is every bit as furious, ugly and glorious as the character deserves. Claws. Rage. Blood on the snow. Jean Grey shouting Logan’s name. This is the Wolverine game the character has been owed since about 1991, and it looks like Insomniac knows it.
It also arrives at the most interesting possible moment. Hugh Jackman is presumed to be Wolverine in our complete Avengers: Doomsday guide, the multiversal event Marvel has been slow-marching all of us toward. So having Insomniac’s Logan slice up a very different, much bleaker mutant world just months before Doomsday is a mood, not a coincidence. Let us break it down.
What is in the Marvel Wolverine trailer?
The Game Features Trailer is the first proper look at how the thing actually plays. Insomniac calls the combat “fast, fluid, and ferocious, with an emphasis on aggressive momentum,” which is corporate-speak for: you press a button, Logan does not stop until things stop moving. There is a Rage system with three tiers that balances how tanky and how mean you are. There are Adaptations, which the studio describes as passive upgrades that amplify momentum on the battlefield, and there are apparently dozens of them, tunable to whatever kind of Wolverine you want to be. Berserker Logan. Field-medic Logan. Sad-Canadian-farmer Logan. Your call.
Logan’s mutant abilities, the Rage system and Adaptations
The trailer spends real time on the mutant abilities that make Wolverine, well, Wolverine. Healing factor is baked into how you survive; the more damage you soak, the more Rage you build, and the higher your Rage tier, the more you tilt from survivable to lethal. It is a clever inversion. In most action games you lose steam as you take hits. Here Logan feeds on it. The angrier he gets, the harder he hits back, which is exactly the Wolverine we know from the comics and from Hugh Jackman’s decades on screen.
Adaptations sit alongside Rage as your progression layer. Think of them as playstyle knobs. Insomniac says there are “dozens” of them, and you slot them to lean into either raw damage, healing tempo, elemental resistances, or crowd-control tools. The takeaway: this is not a linear skill tree. It is a build system, and the smartest Wolverine players will be the ones who read a boss’s move set and re-slot before the fight.
Team X, Jean Grey and the villains Insomniac just showed
The story reveal is genuinely spicy. Logan and Jean Grey are working with Team X to stop Bolivar Trask’s plan against mutantkind. That is a lot of Marvel lore in one sentence. Team X is the shady Weapon X-adjacent black-ops unit Logan ran with in the comics. Trask is the human who invents the Sentinels. Putting them all in one game means Insomniac is playing with the heaviest mutant chess pieces on the board, and it means Jean is not a cameo but a co-lead of the story.
On the villain side, the trailer gives us Omega Red and Lady Deathstrike, two of the meanest one-on-one Wolverine antagonists in Marvel’s rogues gallery. Omega Red is the Soviet super-soldier with the carbonadium coils. Deathstrike is the adamantium-clawed rival whose entire deal is that she is Logan, but faster, meaner and holding a grudge. Marvel could not have picked a better pair to signal “we are taking the deep cuts seriously.” There is real world-hopping, too: Insomniac says the game takes Logan “around the world,” which suggests a globe-trotting Weapon X-flavoured spy-thriller under the mutant metal.
Combat, Special Techniques and suit customization
Marvel Wolverine lets you equip four Special Techniques at once. The trailer name-drops Tornado Spin, Knee Breaker and Spiral Strike, three moves that read like a checklist of “yes, we watched X2.” Loadouts imply a real thumbstick-level rhythm to fights: pop your finisher, cancel into a technique, ride the Rage tier upgrade. Insomniac’s Spider-Man games trained us to combo-cancel; Wolverine looks like the same muscle memory, dialled up several shades darker.
Then there is the drip. Multiple claw types offer both aesthetic and gameplay benefits, including health upgrades. Suit options span the comics, the movies and animated appearances, which is a nice wink at the Hugh Jackman legacy that just powered Deadpool & Wolverine to a billion dollars. There is a Photo Mode arriving day one via update, over one hundred accessibility options, Nightmare Challenges, Mission Replay and New Game Plus. Insomniac is not sneaking this out. This is a full, replayable, single-player experience with the polish we expect from the studio.
When does Marvel Wolverine release?
Insomniac has finally locked the date. Marvel Wolverine launches on September 15, 2026, exclusive to PS5. That timing is delicious. It arrives roughly three months before Avengers: Doomsday on the full MCU release calendar, meaning millions of players will spend the entire pre-Doomsday marketing window with claws in their hands and Wolverine on the brain. Sony and Marvel could not have scripted the cross-promotion better if they had tried, and they very obviously tried.
Why this matters for the MCU X-Men
Insomniac’s Logan is not Hugh Jackman’s Logan, but the vibe cross-pollinates. The game shows a world where Trask is winning and mutants are hunted, a beat that scans hard with reports about the X-Men’s expanding role in Secret Wars and the mutant angle of Doomsday. Whether you are a Marvel Studios diehard or a games-only fan, September 15 becomes the day you start thinking about Wolverine again, right as the Doomsday drums start pounding.
There is also a Discover-ready hook worth flagging: many people are going to find out about Team X, Bolivar Trask and the Sentinels for the first time through this game. Marvel’s live-action X-Men reboot is coming after Secret Wars, and Insomniac is quietly doing the tutorial. Nothing seeds an audience for a mutant movie faster than putting them in a mutant’s shoes for forty hours first.
What happens next
Expect a story trailer next, then pre-order breakdowns, then Insomniac slowly revealing the deeper cuts on that rogues gallery. Do not be shocked if Sabretooth turns up before launch either; the game’s whole thesis is Logan’s world closing in on him, and Creed is the obvious final ingredient. Between now and September 15, keep an eye on PlayStation Blog posts and any Marvel Wolverine State of Play spot.
So, over to you: are you playing rageful Berserker Logan, cold-tactician Weapon X Logan, or full comic-accurate yellow-suit tourist Logan? Tell us in the comments, and we will run your builds against ours the day it drops.
