Marvel keeps calling them two movies, but Avengers Doomsday and Secret Wars are really one story with an interval in the middle. Doomsday breaks the board. Secret Wars sweeps up the pieces and decides what the MCU even is on the other side.
If you have felt lost trying to work out how everything connects, you are not alone, and you are not wrong to think the two films are joined at the hip. Here is the clean version of how the bridge works.
Avengers Doomsday and Secret Wars, one story in two halves
Start with the calendar. Avengers Doomsday lands on 18 December 2026 and Avengers Secret Wars follows in December 2027, and you can see how they sit against the rest of the slate in the full MCU release calendar. Anthony and Joe Russo direct both, and Stephen McFeely is writing both, the same brain trust that split Infinity War and Endgame into a two-part punch.
That pairing is the tell. Like the last Avengers duology, the first film is the gut punch and the second is the comeback, which is why Avengers Doomsday and Secret Wars only really make sense read together.
How Avengers Doomsday sets up Secret Wars
The engine connecting them is the multiverse, and specifically the incursions Doctor Strange warned us about in Multiverse of Madness. When two universes collide, both can die. Doom is the man who learns to weaponise that, and our Doctor Doom explainer digs into why he is the perfect villain to hold both movies together.
So the shape is this: Doomsday is where the walls between realities start collapsing and our heroes lose. Secret Wars is where whatever survives that collapse has to rebuild reality from scratch. One film is the fall, the other is the reset.
What is Battleworld, and why does it matter?
In the comics, Secret Wars ends with the multiverse destroyed and Doctor Doom stitching the surviving fragments into a single patchwork planet called Battleworld, where he rules as a literal god. Different realities become different territories, all held together by Doom.
That is the destination the MCU has been driving toward since it made Doom the face of this saga. Whether Marvel goes full Battleworld or its own spin, the two-movie structure exists so that Doomsday can tear the map up and Secret Wars can redraw it.
How the comics Secret Wars differs from the MCU plan
Comic readers know there is a catch. In the 2015 Secret Wars, Doom does not build Battleworld alone. He steals his god-tier power from the Beyonders and a reality-warping character called the Molecule Man, who is basically the battery that keeps the patchwork planet running. Take Molecule Man out and the whole thing comes apart.
The MCU almost certainly will not run that plot beat for beat, because this Doom is Robert Downey Jr wearing the face of Tony Stark, not the comics tyrant with a cosmic cheat code. Marvel has swapped the source of Doom power from stolen cosmic energy to something far more personal, and that change is the biggest reason Avengers Doomsday and Secret Wars feel like their own story rather than a straight adaptation.
So expect Marvel to keep the shape, a broken multiverse remade under Doom, while rewriting the how. That is exactly why guessing the ending is so much fun right now: the map is familiar, but the route is brand new.
