The biggest Marvel movie that technically has not even started yet might already be taking a breather. A fresh report claims Avengers Secret Wars has slipped into a multi week production pause, even as the Russo Brothers keep insisting the 2027 finale is breathing down their necks.
This is the film meant to close out the entire Multiverse Saga, so naturally every whisper about its schedule sends fandom into a spiral. Here is what is actually being said, and how worried you should really be.
What does the Avengers Secret Wars filming report claim?
According to scooper chatter rounded up from the outlet Filmbase, work on Avengers Secret Wars is currently on a break of roughly five weeks, with cameras expected to roll again near the end of September. The same reporting points to an active UK production base, though whether full principal photography has officially begun is still not something Marvel has confirmed on the record.
Take that last part seriously. Marvel Studios has been unusually locked down on this one, to the point where even confirming the shoot has started feels like pulling teeth. A gap in the schedule for a film this enormous is not automatically a crisis, but in a vacuum this secretive, every pause gets read like a tea leaf.
What have the Russo Brothers actually said?
The directors themselves have been playing it cool. Speaking to Collider after Comic Con, Anthony Russo framed the workload plainly: the team is deep in finishing Doomsday first, then pivoting straight into prep on Secret Wars.
Soon. So soon it makes us sweat a little bit.
Joe Russo, on the Secret Wars start date, to Collider
That is the tension in a nutshell. Officially, the brothers talk about Avengers Secret Wars like a sprint they are about to start. The scooper version has cameras already up and now idling. Both can be true at once on a production that is stitching prep, reshoots and finishing work into one giant assembly line.
Why would Marvel pause the movie?
The boring answer is usually the right one: scheduling. These two Avengers films share cast, crew and the same directors, and Doomsday lands in theatres on 18 December 2026. Finishing that behemoth takes priority, and a planned window to let the edit breathe, lock a script, or wrangle a cast of dozens is exactly the kind of thing that looks like a scary pause from the outside.
The spicier reading is that a movie built to juggle the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom and what feels like the entire MCU is still figuring out its own shape. We would not bet the house on the doom-and-gloom version yet. Breaks like this are routine on films a fraction of this size.
How does this connect to Avengers Doomsday?
Directly. Everything the Russos do on Secret Wars is downstream of how Doomsday ends, and Doomsday is the one nearing the finish line. If you need a refresher on how the films hand off to each other, we broke it down in how the two movies connect, and the confirmed lineup lives in our Avengers Doomsday cast guide.
For the full state of play on the finale, our Avengers Secret Wars guide tracks every rumour, and you can follow where the directors keep popping up in our MCU cast tracker. Since this one started life as a scooper claim, we have also logged it in our scored Marvel rumour tracker.
What happens next
Watch for two things. First, any sign of the UK shoot ramping back up near the end of September, which would quietly confirm the report. Second, the first proper Doomsday marketing push, expected to kick off the studio road to December. Once Doomsday is truly in the can, the Secret Wars picture snaps into focus fast.
