Report: Marvel is reportedly still doing reshoots on Avengers Doomsday reshoots just under four months from release, and Secret Wars is about to begin its main shoot in late September. If that sounds like a lot to have on one plate, well, that is the point.
The claim comes from scooper Daniel Richtman on his Patreon-fed X feed. Per Richtman, “They’re still doing reshoots for Doomsday and filming for Secret Wars should start at the end of September.” That would put Doomsday’s tweaks and Secret Wars’ launch shoot running in parallel through October, at a time when the Russo Brothers should ideally be locking picture on their December movie.
Are reshoots this late a red flag or business as usual?
Deep breath. Reshoots in the final quarter before an MCU release are, weirdly, business as usual. Endgame famously reshot deep into the summer of 2019, and No Way Home had pickups practically up to the mix. What is unusual here is the overlap: a Marvel tentpole starting its principal photography while its immediate predecessor is still being polished on the same lot, with a lot of the same faces. If the report is accurate, Robert Downey Jr., Hugh Jackman, Anthony Mackie and the rest of the sprawling roster on our MCU cast tracker are about to have a very confusing calendar.
How much to believe? Richtman has a strong hit rate on cast confirmations and a mixed one on schedule specifics, so treat this in the 5 to 6 out of 10 band on our scored Marvel rumour tracker. The end-of-September Secret Wars start date matches earlier Cosmic Circus and DiscussingFilm chatter, which is what nudges the score up rather than down.
What does reshooting Doomsday now actually mean?
At this stage, reshoots are almost never a rewrite. They are usually one of three things: connective tissue between existing scenes, a plate for VFX that the effects team could not lock without one more physical pass, or a redo of a scene that did not play the way the Russos wanted in a test. Given the size of Doomsday’s cast, expect option two most of all. If Doctor Doom is getting the digital-layer treatment reported this week (see our Avengers: Doomsday guide), reshoots may well be plate work for that specific effect.
The other, quieter reading: reshoots can be where a character gets more room to breathe. Marvel has a long history of using pickups to expand the movie’s real emotional heart after a test screening reveals the audience wants more of X and less of Y. If Downey’s Doom, the Russos’ central swing, tested well, expect Doom to grow in the final cut, not shrink.
What the late September Secret Wars start means
An end-of-September principal-photography start for Secret Wars would slot the movie into a 2027 release corridor even more concretely than Marvel’s public calendar. It also lines up with previously leaked cast availability windows and with the reshoots on Doomsday, since Marvel loves shooting two films together to save its stars’ expensive schedules. Read our Avengers: Secret Wars guide for the full picture of what we know is coming.
The knock-on: any date change for Doomsday would ripple straight into Secret Wars’ prep. So far the Doomsday date of December 18, 2026 is holding on the full MCU release calendar, and the fact that Marvel is spending on reshoots this late is arguably a vote of confidence in the December window, not a wobble.
The other rumor riding on this one
There is a wrinkle. A separate scooper claim this week said Secret Wars filming had hit a five-week pause, which our MCU cast tracker logged already. Richtman’s end-of-September start does not necessarily contradict that; a paused pre-production timeline can still land the same principal photography start. But if you are keeping score, this is one report against the last, and the two together suggest Marvel’s late-2026 schedule is being juggled harder than the corporate calendar admits.
What happens next
Watch for the first Doomsday post-production credit leaks, any second-unit callsheet that surfaces in Atlanta or Pinewood, and, of course, the second Doomsday trailer. If reshoots are happening, the trailer team is almost certainly holding a shot or two for it. And keep an eye on Downey and the Russos: they are the tell. If they start posting from a set again in the next month, this rumor has legs.
